Derwent dam.

Following the large amount of rain that we have had of late. I ventured out into the Peak District to have a look at Derwent and Lady Bower dams.

The overflow system in full effect.

This dam has a history beyond simply being an eye catching construction. Anyone who is familiar with the Dam busters raid during the second world war against Dams being used by the Germans for their war industry. Well these are not those dams but they are the ones they practiced on in the weeks leading up to the raid. Picture if you will a Lancaster bomber low flying over the top bouncing a bomb right up to it. There are occasional flyovers if you’re interested and they are always worth a watch. Side note this damn was also used in the film.

You can get pretty close to the dam

The other side of the dam, building work begun in the early 1900’s with the dam reaching capacity in 1916. It is one of 3 in this particular chain of reservoirs and there are some great walks that join them which as a regular, I can fully recommend

The other dam, Lady bower has an entirely different overflow method

There are multiple car parks available for these walks close to both dams, although these car parks are very large, they also accommodate a large number of visitors daily so I can’t stress enough that you need to get there early to avoid disappointment. There is however a good deal of lay-by parking available. Again, early birds get the best spot.

I hope to get the chance to visit during a drought as some point one summer, when the water levels are low you can see the remains of Derwent village which sits below the waterline of the reservoir. It is also a good lunch spot during the walk.

Your humble author at Bamford edge.

For an excellent view and an all around great spot. May I recommend Bamford edge located above Lady bower dam, there are many great walks which feature this point and makes a great sunset photo should you have the time. This photo was taken mid day but the sun sets behind me when it does for any photographers reading this.

Just a short post for today, I hope to get more of these posted in between the more time consuming castle posts that I have been doing. Hope you enjoy and should you get the chance to visit the Peak District please do. It is beautiful.

Thanks for reading.
